Political Action for Newcomers

For many of you, this may be the first time you have got involved with a political cause. It can be very frustrating at times to get your message across. The important thing is to remember the ground rules.
First and foremost gain membership in lobbying groups that support your cause. Check the different groups that appeal to your needs and see what they have done to support your cause. This is important for one major reason. NUMBERS! The more people on the membership rolls, the more power the group has. In the 2nd Amendment area there is a number of lobby groups. I belong to several of them and I actively recruit for the Gun Owners of America. Find a group or groups you are comfortable with and join.
Next is the direct lobbying of your State and Federal representatives. This takes time , effort and patience. Phone calls, letters and e-mails are all a part of this effort. Remember that when you call a Senator or representative, especially at the Federal level, you will almost always deal with a staff member. This staff member is trained to tell you what you want to hear. Be very clear and direct about what you are asking the officeholder to do. Research and know the current legislation. Be able to talk with knowledge on the issue. Know the voting record of the officeholder on the issues that concern you.
It is important to remember that unless you are a major contributor to the Senator or representative, or are a close advisor, you will probably not be able to change the views of the officeholder. Now for the good news. No politician who wants to remain in office will vote his views all of the time. They will vote however the need to to stay elected. Until now, the anti gun control voice has been all but silent. Change comes from those who are heard. Stay active, stay involved and keep your eyes on the future.
